TAX SUPPORTED BUDGET BETTER THAN BORROWING- TaxEd ALLIANCE TELLS ZAMBIA
The Tax and Education Alliance (TaxEd Alliance) says Zambia is making progress in using tax to fund the national budget and becoming less dependent on donors and other external sources.
Speaking during the Global Action Week for Education (GAWE) pre-budget dialogue meeting on education in Lusaka, TaxEd representative and ActionAid Tax Project Coordinator Ucizi Ngulube said utilisation of local taxes was the best methodology to grow the national economy than borrowing.
Lundazi Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Hon. Brenda Nyirenda who officiated at the meeting, said there is need to keep close checks and balances on resources allocated to the education sector to ensure prudent utilisation.
The lawmaker who is also a member of the parliamentary committee on education, said all resources allocated to the education should be put to good use.
She said as Zambia to celebrate the GAWE, there was also need to find a collective and long lasting solution to the challenges facing the education sector in Zambia such as pupil over enrollment, inadequate classroom, shortage of teacher and drug/alcohol abuse.
The meeting was organised by TaxEd Alliance and partners - Zambia National Education Coalition (ZANEC), and the National Association for Quality Education in Zambia (NAQEZ).
The theme for the 2024 GAWE is "Transformative Education".
She said the education sector can be used as a key driver of Zambia's economy if resources were put to good use and accounted prudently.
ZANEC board chairperson Henry Kabwe urged stakeholders to unite in developing the education sector.
He said society should celebrate achievements brought about through hard words and not criminality.
" We should support the fight against corruption. We need to work together and not celebrate people who amass wealth using corruption," he said
He said the pre budget dialogue meeting on educating was significant to foster inclusive development in Zambia.
