“SEXTORTION” ON THE RISE, CURB IT-ACTIONAID

ActionAid Zambia has raised an alert on the increasing cases of sex in exchange for public service (sextortion) as it was mostly affecting women.

In its submission before the parliamentary committee on legal affairs, human rights and governance made today, ActionAid has called for more awareness as the happenings were criminal and corrupt.

“There is need for more awareness and dedicated channels to report sextortion that has been a rising trend in Zambia and disproportionately affects women,” the submission states.

ActionAid Head of Programs Musonda Kabinga led his team in presenting the submission before the committee chaired by Chawama Mp, Tasila Lungu Mwansa and deputised by Kalabo Mp, Chinga Miyutu.

In its recommendation, the ActionAid urged the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to utilise its mandate to also sensitise women against sextortion.

Actionaid has also recommend for comprehensive lifestyle audit to complement asset declarations for those who hold public office. It submitted that the lack of a lifestyle audit increased the risks of corruption for public resources.

I response to the submission, the committee appreciated that ActionAid has presented the matter concerning sextortion for consideration.

The committee said it was the first time it was receiving the matter for consideration of parliament and the ACC.
